Galería SUR was founded by Jorge Castillo and Martín Castillo in 1984 in Punta del Este. It is currently directed by Martín Castillo and has a modern space in La Barra. Since its inception it has been linked to the artistic and cultural environment of the Río de la Plata, helping to consolidate the identity of Uruguayan and River Plate art abroad. It represents the masters of modern Latin American art, as well as the Concrete and Kinetic art movements of the Río de la Plata, without neglecting important contemporary artists.

BIO

Eduardo Cardozo (1965, Montevideo) is a distinguished Uruguayan artist renowned for his diverse artistic practice, which spans painting, engraving, video, and installation. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Architecture in Montevideo before refining his engraving techniques under the mentorship of Luis Camnitzer in Italy. Cardozo’s works have been featured in major international exhibitions, including the Cuenca Biennale (Ecuador), Mercosur Biennale (Brazil), the "Do ut do" Biennale (Pompeii, Italy), and the 9th International Beijing Biennale.

With a unique ability to merge abstract and figurative forms, his work is characterized by rich textures, vivid color palettes, and innovative use of materials. He has held solo exhibitions at notable venues such as the National Museum of Visual Arts in Montevideo, Subte Municipal, and the Juan Manuel Blanes Museum. His international exhibitions include Artfullliving in Washington DC, the IDB Gallery, and galleries in Charlotte, NC, and Germany.

Cardozo has received numerous accolades, including First Prizes at the National Visual Arts Salon, the Bicentennial of the National Museum, and the Municipal Salon of Montevideo. In 2024, he was selected to represent Uruguay at the Venice Biennale, solidifying his standing in the global art scene. He has been represented by Galería Sur since 2005.

CURATORIAL

Eduardo Cardozo will develop a special project for ESTE ARTE 2025, related to his most recent research work. Cardozo’s work intricately weaves abstraction with sensory experience, inviting viewers into a world of rhythm, texture, and poetic materiality. Active since the 1980s, his art spans painting, printmaking, video, and installation, demonstrating a commitment to material exploration and emotional resonance. Cardozo’s compositions are defined by a delicate balance between chaos and order, where stains, forms, and textures interact to create a unified whole. The tactility of the canvas and the interplay of colors and textures evoke both landscape and memory, providing an immersive experience.

In his 2012 "Rauschen" series, Cardozo explores the whispering sounds of nature, translating this sensory experience into visual rhythm. His use of unconventional materials, such as burlap, plaster, and found objects, further deepens the connection between form and feeling. By integrating elements from his surroundings, including metal and ceramics, Cardozo creates layered works that emphasize both the ephemeral and the permanent.

Cardozo’s practice transcends stylistic trends, instead focusing on the universal aspects of perception, movement, and memory. His art becomes a meditation on the intangible, offering an invitation to engage with the world in a more intuitive, immersive way. Through his work, Cardozo speaks to both the personal and the collective, urging reflection and discovery.
